Why Pollensa is Mallorca’s cycling capital: the classic routes to Formentor, Lluc and Sa Calobra, the best months to ride, and how to choose a villa for your cycling group.
Every spring, the roads around Pollensa fill with the quiet hum of carbon wheels. Professional teams, club riders and friends on a long-planned week away all come for the same reason: in a single morning from the north of Mallorca you can ride a lighthouse road over the sea, climb into the Tramuntana mountains and still be back at the villa for lunch by the pool.
Pollensa sits exactly where the flat northern bay meets the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain range. That geography gives riders everything within reach: gentle coastal roads for warm-up days, long mountain climbs for the big efforts, and smooth, well-kept tarmac in between. The town itself is made for a ride’s end, with cafés around Plaça Major and the Calvari steps for anyone who still has legs left.
Staying in a private villa rather than a cycling hotel changes the rhythm of the week. No queue for breakfast, space to store and wash the bikes, and a pool to sit beside while the legs recover.
The signature ride of the north. The road climbs out of Port de Pollença to the Mirador des Colomer, then rolls along the peninsula to the lighthouse at the tip, with cliffs dropping into the sea on both sides. It is roughly 40 km there and back from town. In recent summers private car access has been restricted during peak months, which makes it calmer for bikes.
Straight out of Pollensa and up into the mountains on the Ma-10. The climb is steady rather than brutal, and the reward is the monastery of Lluc, the spiritual heart of Mallorca, with a coffee stop in the courtyard before the descent home.
The ride every cyclist comes to Mallorca to tick off. You descend a spectacular ribbon of hairpins to the sea, including the famous knotted bend known as the Nus de sa Corbata, and then climb all the way back up: around 9.5 km at about 7%. From Pollensa it makes a long, unforgettable day, best combined with Lluc.
For the easy day. Follow the bay to Alcúdia, past the old town walls, and continue along the quiet lanes by the S’Albufera wetlands, home to herons and flamingos. Flat, scenic and perfect for tired legs.
Not a route but a ritual. The roadside café at the Sa Batalla junction on the Ma-10 is where half of Mallorca’s cycling traffic stops for coffee and cake. Plan your ride to pass it.
Recovery is where a villa comes into its own. Spend an afternoon out on the water with a day on a boat in the Bay of Pollensa, or stay in and let a private chef cook dinner at the villa after a big day in the mountains.
