A Local Guide to Pollença: Market, Walks, Wine and Art

Pollensina Journal · Local guide

A Sunday market, a café table on the square, a climb above the rooftops and an evening devoted to music. Pollença reveals itself slowly.

This is the Pollença we return to between guest arrivals and long lunches: the old town rather than a checklist. Use this guide as a starting point, then leave room for the streets and conversations that catch your attention.

At a glance: Pollença is the historic inland town; Port de Pollença is the seaside resort. Allow half a day for Plaça Major, the old town and El Calvari. The market is on Sundays. Set aside more time for Puig de Maria or a winery visit.

Sunday at the market

Start in Plaça Major with a coffee, then follow the stalls through the square and neighbouring streets. According to the town council, Pollença’s weekly market runs every Sunday from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm, spreading between Via Pollentia, Plaça Major and Plaça de Ca les Monnares. Expect fruit, vegetables, local produce, flowers, clothing and crafts. Arrive early for a gentler wander and take a basket if you are cooking at your villa. See the town’s market information before setting out.

Coffee at Ca’n Moixet

Stay on the square for the café that locals know as Ca’n Moixet, the Café Espanyol. Its tables at Plaça Major, 2 are made for watching Pollença pass by. A coffee here is less an appointment than a pause in the day.

Two climbs, two views

El Calvari: 365 steps to heaven

From the old town, the cypress-lined stairway rises to the chapel above Pollença. There are 365 steps, and the town opens up behind you as you climb. It is a short outing with a view that feels much larger. Read about El Calvari.

Wear comfortable shoes for the steps and the steeper, cobbled lanes. If the climb does not suit you, linger around Plaça Major, Sant Domingo and the gentler parts of the old town.

Puig de Maria: the longer walk

For more time outdoors, walk up to the sanctuary on Puig de Maria. The wooded path and hilltop views make it a favourite Pollença morning; bring water and shoes suited to the uneven sections. Our guide to hiking in north Mallorca has more ideas. Check the official Puig de Maria route for current access details.

Shopping in the old town

Make time to browse the small independent boutiques and craft shops around the centre, including Carrer d’Antoni Maura. Look beyond a single souvenir: ceramics, linen, books and pieces made on the island are more interesting keepsakes of a stay here.

A short walk through Pollença

Begin on Plaça Major by the parish church of Mare de Déu dels Àngels, wander through the lanes towards El Calvari, then make time for the cloister of Sant Domingo and the Museu de Pollença on your way back. If you want a quieter detour, walk to the Pont Romà over the Torrent de Sant Jordi. Despite its name, the bridge’s precise origins are uncertain.

Sunday is for the energy of the market. On another weekday, you will have more space to appreciate the façades, galleries and quieter streets.

Art, museums and the makers

The Museu de Pollença sits in the former Dominican convent, a fitting place to begin the town’s art story. Continue to the Dionís Bennàssar house museum and check the current exhibitions at Galeria Maior.

Cultural evenings

Pollença’s calendar is worth checking before you arrive. The Festival de Pollença brings music to the Claustre de Sant Domingo, while exhibitions and local celebrations give the town a different rhythm through the year. Consult the official art and music pages for dates rather than relying on an old programme.

Planning your visit to Pollença

How do you get there?

From Palma or the airport, the drive north follows the Ma-13 before turning towards Pollença. Enter Pollença into your satnav: Port de Pollença is the separate coastal town. By public transport, check TIB bus 301 between Palma, Pollença and Port de Pollença; timetables vary by season.

Where should you park on market day?

Avoid driving into the narrow lanes around Plaça Major. Park outside the immediate old town and walk the last few streets. Arriving early on Sunday makes the visit more relaxed, as the centre fills up around the market.

What can you combine with the old town?

Afterwards, head to Port de Pollença or Cala Sant Vicenç for time by the sea. Our guide to Pollença and Port de Pollença explains how the two places differ, while our north Mallorca beach guide has ideas for a swim. Puig de Maria is better treated as a separate outing than a quick addition after the market.

A slow day in Pollença

  1. Browse the Sunday market and have coffee at Ca’n Moixet.
  2. Explore the boutiques and art spaces in the old town.
  3. Climb the Calvari steps for a view across the rooftops.
  4. Save a winery visit or an evening performance for another day.
